Microsoft have recently announced its new OS, the highly we’ve-been-waiting-for Vista. While it looks splendid and very Web 2.0-ish, it is another money-sucking phenomenon from the Bill Gates empire. Through certain ‘behind the curtains’ deals with vendors and dealers Microsoft will soon make billions of bucks on selling the castrated Vista Home Basic. Below are five reasons I think Windows Vista should be hated for and I believe you’ll share ‘em!

I use both. I hate MacHuggers, though, because they give Macs a bad name. They’re so rabid in forcing their opinions on everyone that they become really irrational and can’t explain WHY they feel Macs are superior.

I love keyboards. I use the Dvorak keyboard layout. It has the same physical structure as your QWERTY keyboard, but the keys themselves are linked to different letters. Typing “I hate this” on a Dvorak keyboard in QWERTY would result in “G jakd kjg;”.

I hate this thing that my Toshiba laptop does. I don’t even know what to call it, but if someone out there recognizes the behavior and can give me a verb for it, I’d appreciate it, because then I might be able to call Toshiba, tell them the problem, and eventually solve it. I also hate the fact that I can’t even call this thing by its true name: like it’s some kind of demon that can’t be trapped without a magic word.

Well two years ago, I had as a gift a Palm-top running Pocket PC 2002. I admit that I wasn’t satisfied too much, but I got used of it. It had the usual Microsoft glitches, but anyway it was ok.

Then I have installed the update of Pocket PC 2003 and it was really an improvement. Greek virtual keyboard broke of course and I had to purchase another Greek keyboard software from another vendor (what the hell did you expect, I told you, it’s Microsoft), but at least the resolution had been improved and I had to buy a monster battery because Pocket PC 2003 was draining it as hell, even in the power save mode.

Anyway… due to a sudden rain, the screen of that Palm top had been short circuited, so I set for another one. I was searching for something running Linux, but due to the lack of availability on Linux Palm tops (and especially in Greece) I had ordered a Pocket PC again. Wow. This one is running Pocket PC 2005 and Grrr! The software Greek keyboard won’t run (again, surprise – surprise, but this time I can’t find any software that runs under Pocket PC 2005 properly, my nerves). I had to reinstall the damn thing about 3 or 4 times, to make that crap to install 4 Pocket PC apps properly. I had to rollback my system backup about 3 times to make that crap to run again from sudden failures. I am using it for 15 days, and I have rebooted it more times than I had rebooted the old one on it’s whole two years life.

Pocket PC 2005 sucks. It needs Gay o’ Sync (erm … I mean Active Sync) 4.0 which needs the latest service packs to be installed on the machine it’s gonna be used on. I have to install 2003 SP1 to make the crap run, (at least I was more lucky than the last time I had tried that, because thereafter I had to remove it afterwards, because it had screwed everything), re-install two times the Gay o’ Sync software, because it had failed and won’t let me to do file exchange, got angry many times.

Do you know why Microsoft fails? Because when something works, normal people let it work, they don’t change it. Now Pocket PC 2003 was working and they had successfully turned that into a piece of shit named Pocket PC 2005. Why they haven’t left that thing unchanged? There was really no reason to screw a working thing once again… Baah! Yeah, that’s the truth about all Microsoft products. What was working yesterday, won’t going to work tommorow. I hate this!

My wife was having trouble with her Dell desktop, so I offered to reformat the hard drive for her on Sunday. I’m only moderately computer ignorant, so I figured that I could accomplish this task with relative ease – particularly since I’ve done it before. Or, so I thought…

Microsoft controls the current PC software market and has a de facto monopoly on the desktop. This monopoly has not been achieved and is not being maintained by offering the user community better products than Microsoft’s competitors can offer. On the contrary, Microsoft has earned a reputation for selling unreliable products, thrown together from third-party technology, full of bugs and security holes, and in need of constant maintenance and repair. Windows is a technically inferior operating system with a seriously flawed architecture, a weak security model and sloppy code, while other Microsoft applications are equally kludgey. New Microsoft products are essentially re-wrapped bits of old technology which offer no essential improvements over previous or competing products, and with a Return On Investment between small and zero. In spite of this Microsoft boasts about about being innovative and customer-driven.
