Most would agree that they have forgotten a large majority of what they learned in school. Even more would probably agree that the most valuable lessons learned in life weren’t learned in school at all! I hate school’s routines, for it eliminates the spontaneity of life. I hate school’s dress codes because it subdues the expression of self. I hate school because it says that “I can” or “I can’t” based on test scores.

I hate the fact that teachers nowadays actually “cheat” in order to meet standards… and by the way, whose standards? What does “the standard” really say about one’s self worth or about who meets them and who doesn’t. Our children are given days worth of instruction on what to eat and how much sleep to get simply in order to prepare themselves to meet a standard!? Is this what life is about? Are the lessons learned in school actually preparing us for life or preparing us to make the teachers look like they are doing their jobs well because we are all prepared for the next academic test?

I didn’t learn how to manage money by sitting in a classroom manipulating figures on a piece of paper in math class. I learned how to manage money when I had spent too much on that new jacket I wanted to go to the football game and then realized I didn’t have any money to buy gas to GET to that football game! It wasn’t in school that I was taught the sting of backstabbing. It was the mentor who was to teach me their job in hopes of advancement who actually ended up taking the job away from me to their financial benefit that left the burn on my memory. And it won’t be school that teaches our kids how to face conflict, fear, hunger or poverty as they learn and grown in our world.

I hate school for taking up so much time in the lives of our children spent learning things they will never use. Rather, let us consider teaching outside the classroom. Our children need to learn respect more than anything. Because there is no role model in the classroom, we should start in the wide outdoors! Respect for property and nature. Respect for each other as persons who have feelings and thoughts and ideas that count!

I hate school, because, like a stalk of broccoli, you can make our kids eat, but not learn. There is little academic learning that is taking place in schools. We have teachers who, as children, hated science but have grown up to pass their dislikes for the subject on to students by landing a job that requires they teach that exact subject. How odd it is to go to a student lead parent-teacher conference and be told by my child’s social studies teacher that she “hated this subject when” she was in school. There is plenty to be learned in school alright. Biases, and prejudices. Hate and useless skills for life… I hate school.
