What I Hate About Nokia N70
Gadgets February 22nd, 2006Well, I purchased this smartphone from Nokia two weeks ago. Now I’m ready to point out some features I don’t like in my Nokia N70. Hope my girlfriend reads this and feels ashamed - it’s her who convinced me to buy N70 istead of the wonderful N90 I was going to buy…
My N70 is a nice-looking ‘ivory/auberg’ coloured device, now boarding a 512Mb MMC card. Was equipped with a nice branded leather handrope. Design is nice and pleasant, though I still like N90 better ;)
So, what I do not particularly like about Nokia N70:
1. Keyboard. It’s simply uncomfortable. Easy to miss the thing and press the wrong button as they are stuffed in the small area (button density, heh). The joystick is also far from being my favourite. It sometimes works incorrect and you can easily press one of the directions instead of pressing the center. It is obvious that the ergonomics is lame here… maybe because of the design, or for the sake of it.
2. Battery. Yes, I understand the display needs power, the applications I use also want some and so on. But I hate the fact I need to charge the better once a day. Every day! That’s annoying in the era of the advanced power-saving technologies. Actually this forced me into buying an additional battery.
3. Camera slide. The rear camera slide drives me mad sometimes. It’s always opening when I don’t want and need it to (i.e. when grabbing it out of the pocket). I think Nokia should have thought about some tougher positioning.
4. Performance. Yeah, I know. Smartphones are always slow as hell. Nokia N70 may hope for the first prize in the “Turtle Gadget” contest. Sometimes it takes seconds to browse to the next level of the menu. Not to mention constant bugs, when the smart restarts itself or needs me to do that.
5. Charging gear. I would never understand why Nokia has decided to equip the N-series with the new charging plug. Yeah, thanks for the adapter, but still… Looks like this was done for the sake of brand building (positioning the new series as the ‘completely new… everywhere’), but I hate this, never think about the customer.
Overally, my Nokia N70 is ok. Sometimes. When I don’t think of how good it could be if not for all those nasty minuses. I don’t hate Nokia N70, but I certainly hate particular things about it.
